Anemometers have been used since 1450 when an Italian architect invented the first mechanical version, with various types developed over time to measure wind speed and pressure. There are two main kinds - ones that use rotating cups to measure wind speed, and mechanical or plate versions that measure pressure through spring compression or disk inclination. Modern sonic anemometers also measure pressure through sound time of flight calculations.
